SUMMER CHANGES

FHA OFFICE HOURS ABBREVIATED

At its meeting on June 6, the FHA Board voted unanimously to accept the recommendation of the ad hoc committee appointed by President Jim Ackerman to consider the future of the FHA office when Pat Harkins retires as office manager on June 30.

The committee recommended that, for the months of July and August only, the office be open from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. During those two months, in which the office is less busy than normal, it will be staffed by volunteers, organized and scheduled by Mary Lou Einloth.

The board will continue to consider how the office should be staffed after August.

NO BOARD MEETINGS IN JULY OR AUGUST

There will be no FHA Board meeting in July or August. The next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, September 5 at 7 p.m. at the Gathering Place.

NEW FACES ON THE WEB SITE AND E-MAIL LIST

Among the many valuable services that Bob Comey has provided to this community, and for which we all should be grateful, are his contributions to the FHA Web Site since its inception and his creation and maintenance of the FHA E-Mail list. Unfortunately for Fearrington, Bob and Sallie Comey will be leaving us shortly. We are fortunate that three people have stepped forward to volunteer their services for these two tasks.

Website Home Page: Don Niedringhaus (542-0480; Donald.NiedringhausATprodigy.net) assumes responsibility for maintaining the web site’s home page and the What’s New page. If you have items, such as upcoming events or general information that you want to share with Fearrington residents and wish to see published on these pages – the home page contains short items, the What’s New Page contains longer items with links from the home page – please contact Don. If it is not obvious from the content of the item, be sure to let Don know when the information in the item expires.

FHA Mail List: Maggie Tunstall (542-0031; metunstallATnc.rr.com) assumes responsibility for maintaining the e-mail List. If you have an urgent message that needs to be e-mailed to the 900-plus addresses on the list, contact Maggie. Ted Bonus (542-4617; tbonusATearthlink.net) is Maggie’s backup when she is not available. Please keep in mind that the e-mail list is for time-sensitive messages that apply to the whole community. The list is not an appropriate medium for items that are of interest to only a subset of the community (such as the members of a club or organization) or can be or have been publicized in the newsletter. The complete policy statement on the use of the list can be found at http://66.39.108.108/archives/ComputerPolicy/MassMailings.htm. – Richard Bird, FHA Computer Committee

WHAT’S GOING ON IN AND AROUND FEARRINGTON

DUPLICATE BRIDGE MEANS BILLIONS OF FUN

Any time a bridge player picks up his 13 cards, he has the potential of 635 billion combinations. Therefore, the fun of bridge is that no game of bridge is like any other. That is true for an individual. But when duplicate bridge is played, all of the tables play the same hands. The challenge for you as a player (with your partner, it is hoped) is to play the hand or defend it better than the other participants in the room.

We play every Wednesday throughout the summer beginning at 1 p.m. at the Gathering Place. Fearrington Duplicate Bridge Club members meet to hone their skills and vie for the honor of playing an afternoon of bridge hands better than the others in the room. We have fun!

Anyone is welcome to join us. The first time you play there is no cost. After that, we charge $4/time to cover the cost of renting the room, supplies and hiring a director. We have a list of substitutes. Please call Annette Levine, 545-9811, or Jean Hjelle, 545-0432, if we can help you tackle some of those 635 billion hands.

Although the sale is not until February, we are happy to accept things now. Call Nancy Baker at 545-9884 during July and Janet Dopler at 542-2815 during August. Let us know if you need help getting things to us, and we will arrange pick up.

THE MUSIC SCENE

MUSIC IN THE AIR PENCILS IN FALL SCHEDULE

Music in the Air completed its abbreviated spring season on June 11. We had good crowds for the two performances, so we will keep Music in the Air. We are fortunate to have the cooperation of the Swim & Croquet Club and the Gathering Place for these concerts.

The fall schedule is just about set. The idea was to engage a good mix of what I have been hearing supporters appreciate. All performances will be on Sunday afternoon, 4:30-5:30 p.m. For the first two performances, we have the Swim & Croquet Club upper lawn. The last two performances, scheduled for late October, will be held in the Gathering Place, as the pool will be closed. The fall schedule will look like this:

September 24 – Durham Savoyards, Gilbert and Sullivan, Patience.

October 8 – Sugar Hollow, an all-female quintet singing and playing folk, old favorites and their own creations.

October 22 – Jazz, Heart of Carolina Sextet, big band sound (subject to final confirmation).

October 29 – New Hope Players, flute and string quartet featuring a program of songs from Mozart favorites, including, of course, The Magic Flute.

Of course, as always, these concerts are free. We pass the hat for a vote of appreciation from the audience. I am keeping an e-mail list of folks who want to be kept informed of news and developments, reminders, etc. If you wish to be added to this list, send me a message at efchetwyndATaol.com. -- Eric Chetwynd

AN INVITATION TO JOIN VILLAGE VOICES

You are cordially invited to join Village Voices, the women's chorus of Fearrington. The group is on hiatus for the summer, but it's not too soon to be thinking musically and marking your calendar. Our first rehearsal of the new ’06-’07 season will be held on Monday, September 10 from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m. at the Gathering Place.

We perform two concerts a year in the Barn – a holiday concert in early December and a spring concert in May. Our repertoire includes a wide variety of music – different styles, different eras, all fun to sing. During the season just concluded, we established the precedent of combining our talents with those of the Fearrington men's chorus, the Harmony Grits, for some of the selections, which added another highly enjoyable dimension to our programming.

There are no auditions, although prior vocal experience is helpful. The only prerequisites are a love of singing and residence in Fearrington or Galloway Ridge. General rehearsals are weekly on Monday afternoons and a sectional rehearsal most weeks at the discretion of each vocal section. Our director, Matt Fry, and accompanist, Dan Hadley are accomplished professional musicians – with great senses of humor to boot.

If you can carry a tune, enjoy great camaraderie and a sense of accomplishment, this is the group for you. Have a wonderful summer and come join us on September 10. For more information, contact Sandy Kelley, president, 542-6750 or Dinah McAllister, membership chair, 545-9809.

SPECIAL VOLUNTEER NEEDED

We regret that our loyal, longtime volunteer, Rowie Samson, is moving from Fearrington and will no longer be organizing and scheduling volunteer drivers for Fearrington Cares. Rowie has provided an invaluable service to the community for the past five years, and we will miss her dearly. Fearrington Cares acknowledges her contribution and deeply appreciates all of the work she has done for Fearrington residents.

We are seeking a volunteer who will take over Rowie’s scheduling responsibilities. This volunteer will work with Barbara McMullan, Fearrington Cares board member, to make sure that drivers are available. If you have an interest in taking on this important job, please contact Barbara McMullan at 542-2129 to discuss specifics.

SOME TIMELY REMINDERS

Fearrington Cares has loads of information about independent living and services available to Fearrington residents to help them “age in place.” You can access this information on the web (fhafearrington.org/fearringtoncares) or by perusing our file drawers where much information is stored. We also have a library of medical VHS tapes that may be viewed here or can be taken home for viewing. The list of titles is on our web site. And, as always, the nurse will assist you in determining what services may be beneficial to your particular situation.

We are always looking for volunteers to keep our organization vibrant and relevant. If you have skills to share, please complete our volunteer sheet so we can call on you when needing help for various projects and duties.

We are still accepting donations to keep our doors open for business. If you have not yet sent a donation to Fearrington Cares, please consider being a yearly contributor. You never know when you (or one of your neighbors) will need our valuable services. Who knows? You may someday need us!

The next course will be presented at the Gathering Place on October 19 and 20. For more information, call Joe at 545-0710.

FHA NEWS

SUMMARY OF THE JUNE 6 BOARD MEETING

The following is an abbreviated version of the minutes due to space considerations in the Newsletter. Complete minutes are available in the FHA office, the mail kiosks and on the web site, by clicking here.

The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Jim Ackerman in the Gathering Place. Prior to the call to order, the president announced that going forward there will be no distinction between work sessions and open meetings of the board to allow for transparency.

Treasurer’s Report

Bob Flower reported that income for April was $2,726, primarily from dues. Expenses totaled $8,249, which included $7,916, primarily for Grounds and Facilities, Community Affairs 25th Anniversary, copier and the Gathering Place. Bob noted that the FHA received a refund check from SunTrust for $661.64 for automatic debiting fees and transaction fees that will be waived in the future.

Following the suggestion of the board, Bob made the following motion:

“I move that we appropriate funds not to exceed $2,500 to obtain a professional audit of the FHA financial records for the fiscal year January 1 through December 31, 2005. Three estimates have been obtained from CPA firms ranging from $1,400 to $5,000. The estimated completion time is 3-4 weeks from the contract start date.” The motion was seconded by Ingram Austin. It carried unanimously.

FHA Office Update

Gillian Cell noted that the president had appointed a committee at the last open board meeting to study the issue of how to manage the office 1) in the short term, during the summer and 2) in the long term, by volunteer or paid management. The committee (made up of current and former volunteers and three board members) met twice and focused primarily on the issue of summer office service. At the request of the board, the committee will address the long-range issues next, including the description of the office manager’s job. In conclusion, the committee recommended that volunteers run the office during the summer as a temporary solution to the office management vacancy. Gill read a list of rules and responsibilities formulated by the committee for the summer volunteers. She also noted that a second committee of current volunteers had organized, met once and reported back that they were in favor of progressing to paid management immediately. A lengthy discussion followed with input from residents.

At the suggestion of the appointed committee, Gill introduced the following motion:

“That, during July and August of 2006, the FHA office be open from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays, and be managed by the volunteers who will have specific responsibilities to ensure the proper functioning of the office.” The motion was seconded by Joanne Flower and carried unanimously.

Reconfiguration of the Gathering Place Parking Lot

Carol-Ann Greenslade reported that the parking lot reconfiguration is ongoing and that some directional changes are taking place. The new traffic pattern should be established and followed by July 1.

Beaver Pond

Jim Bond, Carol-Ann and Bill Sommers will meet with a representative of the state DOT on June 8. The goal will be to determine how much in actual dollars the state will contribute to the remediation of Beaver Pond and to get a firm commitment from them. The hope is that the state will share one-third of the cost of the project, which is estimated at $30,000 total.

Road Safety

The Road Safety Committee (RSC) has been reconstituted. Carol-Ann reviewed a letter written by the RSC to the sheriff asking for his advice/assistance regarding road safety in Fearrington. The RSC would like the support of the board in sending this letter. It requests a meeting of the sheriff, the RSC and the board and ultimately perhaps a meeting with the whole community.

The RSC has also created a coloring book promoting road safety, and it is hoped that Fitch Creations will underwrite the printing of the book. Emphasis on an educational campaign regarding road safety will continue. Gill moved that the letter to the sheriff has the support of the board and should be sent. The motion was seconded by Jim Bond. It carried unanimously.

A discussion regarding road safety followed. Carol-Ann noted that adding more speed limit signs has already been investigated by the RSC and Fearrington doesn’t have the population or number of roads to justify more speed limit signs.

Adopt-a-Parcel

Carol-Ann explained that the Adopt-a-Parcel program has been in place for a long time and the language has recently been updated without changing the substance of the policy. She moved that the board approve the application of the Stone Edge neighborhood for Adopt-a-Parcel funds. The motion was seconded by Jim Bond and passed unanimously.

Audio System Status Report

Lowell Kennedy reported that a surround-sound system with five-six speakers has been purchased for the Gathering Place. The plan is to test the speakers (hopefully by the end of this month) and then install the whole system. The system may be upgraded to include “looping,” depending on the response of those who need hearing assistance. A suggestion was made to survey the community before “looping” the room to ascertain how many people have hearing aids appropriate for “looping.” – Joanne Flower, FHA Secretary

TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGES AT THE GATHERING PLACE

The new traffic pattern printed in the last issue of the Newsletter goes into effect July 1, with the following change: The right turn from the mail kiosk into the Gathering Place parking area will no longer be permitted. A right turn there would place the turning car into the path of oncoming one-way traffic. In the interests of your own and others safety, please observe the newly painted arrows on the pavement. - Carol-Anne Greenslade, Grounds and Facilities

BOARD THANKS THE COMEYS

The FHA Board adopted the following resolution on June 6:

WHEREAS Bob Comey has served the Fearrington Homeowners Association and the community as Secretary of the Board, Chair of the Nominating Committee, co-editor of the monthly Newsletter, a long-time member of the Communications/Publications Committee, an originator of the website, and in other ways too numerous to count. In addition, his wife Sallie has been a major contributor to life in Fearrington through her service as a board member of Fearrington Cares, president of Arts & Crafts, an active member of the Women’s Club and a block captain, and

WHEREAS they have been models to us all of the ways in which volunteers have shaped the character of this caring community,

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that this Board and the Fearrington community express to them their heartfelt thanks, and extend to them their best wishes as they move to Carolina Meadows.

DISTRACTIONS HAMPER DRIVING SAFETY

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, distracted drivers cause 25% of the more than 6 million accidents reported to police in the United States every year.

Distractions include using a cell phone, eating, drinking, smoking, reading, talking to passengers, shaving and changing radio stations. In a recent study, 91% of drivers surveyed admitted to engaging in some sort of risky behavior while driving.

The demands on safe drivers are constantly changing. To stay safe while driving, we must be aware of everything that is happening around us in order to have as much time as possible to react. Therefore, the more distractions we eliminate, or reduce, the safer we will be. – Joe Geoghegan, Road Safety Committee
