AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM
Why take a driver safety class? Because cars have changed and so have the
traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads you travel every day. Some
drivers age 50-plus have never looked back since they got their first
driver's licenses but even the most experienced drivers benefit from
brushing up on their driving knowledge. This is a classroom lecture with no
test, just a chance to have a greater appreciation of driving challenges and
how you can avoid potential collisions and injuries to yourself and others.
By taking this class you may be eligible to receive an insurance discount
upon completing the course. Consult your agent for details. Although the
class is geared to drivers age 50 and older, the course is open to people of
all ages. If you are interested in participating in this class please call
Alison at 545-2685 by Monday, April 5. There will be a lunch break in the
middle of the class. Details: Friday, April 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30
a.m. in the Galloway Ridge Auditorium. The cost os $12 for AARP members
and $14 for non-members.

Secrets of Eden. Chris Bohjalian continues to garner widespread critical
acclaim for his realistic and provocative writing. His latest novel shines
the light on the issue of domestic violence. Secrets of Eden is both a
haunting literary thriller and a deeply evocative testament to the inner
complexities which mark all of our lives. Once again, Bohjalian has given us
a riveting page-turner in which nothing is precisely what it seems.

GREAT
DECISIONS
North America is the most important continent Americans know virtually
nothing about! Canada is the largest supplier of foreign oil, natural gas
and electricity to the U.S. and Mexico was on track to be our second largest
oil supplier in 2009. Canada is our largest trading partner and Mexico
remains the second largest market for U.S. exports. Our trade with these
two countries exceeds U.S. trade with Japan and the entire European Union
combined! Only a handful of Americans can identify the leader of either
country.
Stephen R. Kelly is a 27-year career Foreign Service Officer currently
assigned to Duke University as the Department of State Diplomat in
Residence. Mr. Kelly has served as Deputy Chief of Mission to Mexico (2004
- 2006) and to Canada (2000 - 2004). Prior to the Duke assignment, he was
Director of the Senior Level Assignments Division at the State Department.
Great Decisions is fortunate to have Mr. Kelly join us on Thursday,
March 11 at 1:30 p.m. in the Gathering Place. He will speak on
America's Neighbors and Borders and make the case that we need to pay more
attention to them. This program is free and open to all Fearrington
residents and their guests.

HAVURAH
On March 9, at 8:00 p.m. at the Gathering Place, Dr. Laura Lieber, an
Assistant Professor in the Department of Religion at Duke University and the
Assistant Director of the Center for Jewish Studies at Duke, will address
the Fearrington Havurah. Prof. Lieber received her B.A., Summa Cum Laude,
from the University of Arkansas; her M.A. and Rabbinic Ordination from
Hebrew Union College; and her Ph.D. in the History of Judaism from the
University of Chicago.
The title of her talk is The Song of Songs which is the subject of an
upcoming book of Professor Lieber's. This work, also known as the Song of
Solomon, is considered among the most intriguing in the Old Testament. It
involves an unidentified woman and man and suggests movement from courtship
to consummation. While there is no explicitly religious content it is often
interpreted as an allegorical representation of the relationship of God and
Israel.
This event will commence with refreshments at 7:15 p.m. and, as usual,
guests and visitors are welcome. Please call Bob Glass at 542-1426 with any
questions.

DR. EFIRD RETURNS TO FEARRINGTON!
At 10 a.m. on Monday, March 8, and for the following three Mondays,
Dr. James 'Mickey' Efird, Duke University's Emeritus Professor of Biblical
Interpretation, will return to the Gathering Place to speak on Luke's Acts
of the Apostles and Paul's letter to the Galatians.
Focused on two major apostles, Peter and Paul, Acts is Luke's account of the
beginning and growth of the Christian Church in the first century. Paul, who
carried the good news about Jesus to the Greco-Roman world, quickly assumes
the leading role in Acts. Dr. Efird includes Galatians in this series in
order to reconcile Luke's account of Paul's work. Dr. Efird will also
highlight the theological and religious teachings found in both books.
A long-time favorite of Fearringtonians, Dr. Efird's subsequent lectures are
planned for March 15, 22, and 29. All four will begin at 10:00 a.m. and last
ninety minutes. All Village and Galloway Ridge residents are welcome to
attend the Fearrington Bible Lecture Series free of charge, though entirely
voluntary donations to help cover the cost of these lectures are welcome.
Please bring a friend.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Chatham Habitat just celebrated its twentieth anniversary and has built more
than 80 houses in our county! Fearringtonians were instrumental in starting
the Chatham chapter and have helped staff the Habitat Home Stores in
Pittsboro ever since. We are justly proud of Habitat's growth in our county.
The
only area not keeping pace with this growth is the number of new volunteers.
As people have moved away from Fearrington they have left a void which has
not been filled. In an effort to inform residents about the pleasures and
value of volunteering in our Chatham Habitat Home Stores, we are having
informal parties on March 12 and March 19 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. There will
be entertainment, wine, soda and edible goodies. Current volunteers and
representatives from the Home Stores will be available to answer questions.
The March 12 party will be at the home of Linda Lang and Vickie Shea at 32
McDowell in East Camden (RSVP:
victoria.shea-AT-mindspring.com or 545-0024). The March 19 party will be
at the home of Ruth and John Leopold at 806 Brookfield in Bush Creek (RSVP:
ruthleopold-AT-earthlink.net or 545-9144) by March 5, please. All
interested potential volunteers welcome.

will benefit the library. Fearrington residents have been key to the
success of this sale. They are donors, volunteers, and purchasers. All
proceeds of the sale go to benefit the public library. One Fearrington

event was talking about books and exchanging names of authors and titles.
Come to the sale: visit with neighbors, buy books for the beach or a rainy
day and support your local library! If you would like to join the many

UN ASSOCIATION
FOCUSES ON MALARIA PREVENTION
Malaria is the single greatest cause of death for the world's children,
killing 3,000 children under 5 every day. This toll could be drastically cut
by protecting them with bed-nets while they sleep. As a prelude to a benefit
concert (see below), Eve Van Devender of the Center for International Health
of RTI, a leading research institute based in Research Triangle Park, will
discuss malaria's impact on developing countries at our Lunch and Learn
meeting. Eve coordinates home office operations for RTI's global health
programs across 24 countries focusing on malaria and other tropical disease
control. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 24, from 12:00 p.m.
to 2:00 p.m. at Carolina Meadows on Whippoorwill Lane in Chapel Hill.
Reservations should be made by check for $17.00 to "UNA-USA West Triangle
Chapter," and sent to Barbara Rodbell, 404 Carolina Meadows Villa, Chapel
Hill, NC 27517. Reservations deadline is Friday, March 19.
The West Triangle Chapter of the United Nations Association of the USA will
collaborate with the world-famous Ciompi Quartet to present a benefit
concert to save children's lives in Africa. The concert will take place at
the Community Church of Chapel Hill on Wednesday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m.
and the proceeds will be used to purchase insecticide impregnated
anti-malaria bed nets. The program will include string quartets by Beethoven
and Bartok.
The contribution by attendees is $25 per ticket, which will include a
reception after the concert to meet the musicians. Tickets may be ordered or
reservations made by calling 419-9525 or emailing
amsherman-AT-earthlink.
The World Health Organization estimates that fewer than one in four children
in Africa under the age of five sleeps under a net at night. But there
aren't enough nets available and, as a consequence, a child dies every 30
seconds - 3,000 a day. Children who sleep under an insecticide treated net
cut their risk of contracting malaria in half. Come to the concert and join
the global fight against malaria.

FEARRINGTON CARES
ANNUAL MEETING A GREAT SUCCESS
More than 160 brave souls sloshed through a downpour to attend the February
5th Annual Meeting. The meeting was a salute to our fantastic volunteers and
donors and we were most grateful for the many expressions of support we
received. Despite the weather, spirits were high inside the Barn (thanks to
RB Fitch and Gilda McDaniel) and those attending enjoyed a good time (thanks
to Carol Sherrod's arrangements committee).
Our 2009 annual report summarizes all of our activities over the past year
and encourages you to give us your comments and feedback. We are proud to
report that by October 2009, all the objectives of our 2007 Strategic Plan
were either met or were works in progress. Stop by the office for a copy of
the report or for pamphlets and a price list related to the Galloway Ridge
'Partners in Caring' program.

DIRECTOR SEARCH UNDERWAY
This year we were extremely fortunate to receive a three-year commitment
from the Arthur Carlsen Charitable Fund of the Triangle Community
Foundation. This grant is restricted to paying the start-up expenses of a
part-time (20 hours/week) Executive Director (ED). It was given to us in
recognition of Fearrington Cares' growing administrative and management
needs and we are truly grateful for this support.
Fearrington Cares (including its predecessor organizations) has been in
existence for 20 years. During that time, it has been an almost entirely
volunteer organization. Exceptions have been the part-time professional
nurse and more recently a part-time administrative assistant.
In 2007, Fearrington Cares developed a Strategic Plan, which has driven
everything we have done in the past two years. That plan included exploring
the need for an ED for our organization. Much time since then has been
devoted to analyzing, asking questions, forming recommendations and writing
and re-writing job descriptions (www.fearringtoncares.org/contact-fearrington-cares/).
The Board of Fearrington Cares has been an operational board, running the
day-to-day business of the organization. Over the past two years, as
services have grown to meet community needs, the burden of work placed on
the Board has increased considerably. There is a need for professional help
to keep things well-coordinated and running smoothly. This was the subject
of a Board retreat held last June, led by consultants from the Executive
Service Corps. Both they and the Triangle Community Foundation advised us
that an organization of our size, complexity and varied services should have
an ED. We have also learned that almost all similar organizations across the
country have an ED.
With an ED, our board will gradually spend more time on policy decisions and
less on hands-on operations. More importantly, an ED will handle
administrative and managerial functions, thus freeing our nurse, Joyce
Baird, to concentrate solely on medical issues and the growing need for her
services, especially in-home services.
After the three-year start-up period, the Triangle Community Foundation
expects us to fund the ED position. We know that our Fearrington donors will
vote on the success of this ED endeavor, and indeed on all our efforts, with
their checkbooks. During the coming year, the value of the ED position will
become clear.
The closing date for applications for the ED position was February 5.
Applications are currently being reviewed and the target hiring date is
April 1.

BRAIN INJURY AWARENESS MONTH
The Brainiacs, Fearrington's Brain Injury Support Group would like to
educate Fearringtonians about brain injury.
Examples of brain injury include, but are not limited to, a blow to the
head, lack of oxygen, brain tumor, stroke or a penetrating wound, such as a
gun shot.
Men are twice as likely as women to experience brain injury and males
between 15 and 24 have the highest rates of injury. However, this injury
impacts individuals of all ages.
After a brain injury, an individual can experience emotional, physical and
cognitive changes. The impact of these changes is related to the location
and severity of the injury. Although many people experience brain injury,
each injury alters an individual differently. Brain injury not only impacts
the individual, but the whole family. Often, how the individual interacts
and supports his/her family changes after the injury. Consequently, it is
important to find appropriate professional and medical supports to meet the
varied needs of the whole family.
The Brainiacs welcome new members. If you would like to join this
confidential and supportive group, we meet each Thursday from 10:00 Ð 11:00
a.m. at the FC office. Contact Joyce Baird, RN, for more information
(542-6877).
For more information about Brain Injury, please refer to the Brain Injury
Association of America's website,
