Fearrington Homeowners Association
Transportation Information

February 2004

The recent FHA Long Range Planning survey showed transportation as a major area of concern. Residents put a high priority on help in getting to a number of destinations: Chapel Hill, Chatham Crossing, Southpoint Mall and the RDU International Airport. The following is information on public transportation to and from these destinations.

Chapel Hill – the most effective public transportation to a doctor’s appointment, shopping or classes in Chapel Hill is the Chatham Transit Network (CTN) and the Chapel Hill Transit system. Fearrington Cares (542-1930) drivers will take you to doctors’ appointments or shopping at Chatham Crossing.

Chatham Transit Network (CTN) - 542-5136 (8 am to 5 pm weekdays)

- Travels a fixed route from Siler City to Pittsboro to Chapel Hill and back each weekday, picking up and dropping off at homes within 2 1/2 miles of this route

- Arrives in Chapel Hill at the UNC Ambulatory Care Center and then the Main Hospital a few minutes before 8:30 am, 12:30 pm and 4:30 pm

- Returns via the same route to Siler City, leaving UNC hospitals at 8:30 am, 12:30 pm and 4:30 pm

- Will pick up and drop off at your house in Fearrington Village with prior reservations with the dispatcher (542-5136). Reservations can be made at the last minute, but to ensure availability, call a day or two in advance. Reserve your return trip in advance or on the van. Drivers will wait 5 to 10 minutes if you expect to arrive a few minutes late. Call the dispatcher for last-minute changes.

- One-way fare (exact change) is $1.00 for under 13 years, over 59 years and disabled. Others are $2.00.

Chapel Hill Transit 968-2769

- Connects with CTN in Chapel Hill a few feet from either CTN stop

- Ride free throughout Chapel Hill

- Internet web site address: www.ci.chapel-hill.nc.us/transit/

Chatham Crossing shopping mall –– getting to and from Chatham Crossing is easy and inexpensive. The CTN (described above) will stop at Chatham Crossing upon request.

The Streets at Southpoint Mall (Southpoint) – This all-day trip requires only one change of bus at the UNC Hospital each way.

- Take the CTN from your home at about 8 am (see CTN information above for reservations, prices and other details)

- At the UNC Main Hospital walk to the Manning Drive covered bus stop (Unfortunately this bus stop is not marked TTA – but rest assured the TTA stops here ) and board the Triangle Transit Authority (see below for TTA information for prices and other details) bus #412 (RTP via Southpoint). (Bus leaves at 8:17 & 8:47 am and every half hour until 9:17am.)

- Return to the UNC Main Hospital stop using TTA bus #413 at 3:14, 3:44 or 4:14 pm from Southpoint Mall arriving at UNC Hospitals at 25 min later.

- Take the CTN at 4:30 pm (be sure to tell driver to wait for you) from UNC Hospitals to your home. Unfortunately, there is no bus service from Southpoint Mall during the mid-day.

RDU Airport – there are several ways to get to and from the airport from Fearrington, ranging from inexpensive and complicated to straightforward and relatively expensive.

I. Most complicated, inexpensive:

Step 1. Take the CTN (see above) to the UNC Main Hospital about 30 minutes.

Step 2. At the UNC Main Hospital walk to the Manning Drive covered bus stop (unfortunately this bus stop is not marked TTA – but rest assured the TTA stops here ) and board the TTA bus. Take either Bus #402 (RTP via Woodcroft) or Bus #412 (RTP via Southpoint) to the Research Triangle Park (RTP) hub, about 35 minutes.

Step 3. Take the TTA airport shuttle from the RTP hub to the RDU airport (stops at all terminals), about 20 minutes.

Step 4 (Return). Take the TTA airport shuttle to the RTP hub.

Step 5. Connect with either TTA Bus #403 or #413 to the UNC Main Hospital.

Step 6. Return home via the CTN from the Main Hospital entrance (must reserve).

II. Less complicated:

Diamond Express (542-5893), with which a Fearrington resident is involved, will take you in your own car ($25 one way, $45 round trip) or $45 one way in the company car.

Viking Travel (542-5880) provides airport service. Call for rates and conditions.

Other services are listed in telephone directories, i.e., Brad’s Transportation in Chapel Hill (493-5890) has rates ranging from $58 for 1 or 2 to $106 for 6 passengers, each way.

III. Least complicated, last minute: Call the RDU Airport Taxi Service at 840-7277. They will pick you up on your schedule – give clear directions to your house. The cost will be between $60 and $80 plus tip (usually about 10%) each way.

Some general FHA transportation notes and random information:

- Some groups in Fearrington have organized car pools to share driving to and from appointments, events and the airport. These are private enterprises and will not be published here. Ask your neighbors to learn more.

- CTN may be willing to drop you off within 2.5 miles of their route in Chapel Hill. They don’t seem to have worked out that yet. It may depend on the driver.

- There are other services of CTN for groups traveling together to and from an event. These are called “Special Services”. Information is available from CTN.

- TTA stops at the Duke Hospital and the VA Hospital in Durham.
