AM Book Group

American Association of University Women
A national organization of college graduates committed to making a significant impact on education and equity for women and girls. Awards educational fellowships and grants and provides funding for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination. Interest and study groups provided in women's biography and autobiography, international affairs, literature, French conversation and bridge. Arts & Crafts, Etc.
A friendly group promoting a greater interest in and enjoyment of the creative and performing arts. Objectives are achieved through lectures, demonstrations, workshops and trips.  Additionally, the club encourages participation in charitable endeavors.  Meets:  First Monday, 1:30 p.m.  Nancy Keadey (542-7365)

Adopt-a-Highway
Village residents get together every other month to police trash along U.S. 15-501 outside the entrance to Fearrington Village. Love to have you join us! We usually meet at 9:00am at the Gathering Place to distribute gloves and vests and bags that are provided by the Department of Transportation. Most of us bring our pick-up sticks and find we finish the pick-up easily in two hours. All in our group have found this is a great way to get some walking exercise and at the same time we feel good about helping keep North Carolina clean and green. WE REALLY NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS. Amateur Birders
Explore various Fearrington Village areas and  “off campus” to find (see or hear!) and learn to identify birds. Target time is 1˝-2 hours, unless we plan to go Eagle watching at Jordan Lake, which takes about three hours overall. Must have binoculars. Meets:  Fridays, 8 a.m. from Oct. 1 through April 30; 7:30 a.m. from May1 through September 30, at the Smokehouse kiosk.  Mary Bratton (545-9687)

Bocce
Try your skills before joining. Membership includes regular play, two social events and participation in the Chatham County Senior Games (usually in April). Initiation fee: $15. Annual dues: $5.  Men: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 9:30 a.m. (winter, 1:30 p.m.). Women: Wednesday, 1:30 p.m. (winter, 9:30 a.m.). Bulls & Bears Investment Club
A partnership of Fearrington residents wishing to improve their knowledge of investing. All partners are encouraged and expected to take a lively interest in the affairs of the club. Card Knights
Play   poker for their enjoyment and good fellowship. Meets: Monday, 7 p.m. Don O'Reilly  (542-7481).

Chapel Hill Community Chorus performs three concerts a year: December, May and July.  We are a group of singers dedicated to performing high quality choral music from a variety of traditions.  Membership is open to persons wishing to sing and develop choral ensemble skills. Auditions are required. Chatham County Council on Aging
Highway 87, Pittsboro. Services include in-home nursing assistance, Meals on Wheels, transportation, fitness, exercise program and health screenings.  (542-4512; 542-5191)

Chatham Citizens for Effective Communities (CCEC)
CCEC is a non profit organization whose goal is to enhance Chatham's future through information, education and advocacy. We promote open and responsible county and town government; the preservation of water, waterways and watershed; and responsible, well-planned growth. Open to all Chatham citizens. Chatham County Habitat for Humanity
Fearringtonians have been vital to the founding and continuing success of Habitat for Humanity, serving on the board of directors and operating committees, staffing the resale store and helping in the construction of houses. Amy Powell (542-0794); store: 467 West St, Pittsboro (542-0788)

Christian Bible Study Groups
Fearrington men and women meet weekly in homes to develop a deeper understanding of their Christian faith through Bible study. Studies are all  Bible-based and Christ-centered and require homework.  Periodically the groups arrange programs by Christian scholars.

Concert Series
Offers residents of Fearrington Village an annual series of five moderately priced classical chamber music concerts by talented professional musicians in our area. Open to everyone. A subscription series, but seats are usually available at the door. Concerts: Sundays, 3 p.m.  George Hunt (542-1750)

Cyclists
Enjoy leisurely non-competitive rides on back country roads surrounding Fearrington. Meets: Sundays, 9:00 a.m. (April through September) or 9:30 (October through March), at the Old Granary Restaurant. The camaraderie is great. Renee Fink (542-6353) or Bob Steen (bobsteen@pobox.com or 542-1533).

Democratic Club
Provides a forum for knowledge and discussion of national, state, and local issues and political candidates. Dues $10. Meets: fourth Tuesday, 7:15PM. Bob DeVido (542-1188).

Duplicate Bridge Club
Club belongs to the American Contract Bridge League and has its own registered director. Plays 24 boards. Games are stratified so that novices as well as more experienced players can compete. Partners provided for single players. Meets: Wednesdays, 1 p.m. Joan Angevine (642-0042).

Fearrington Film Club
On the First Thursday of each month (January through June, September through December) a film is shown at 7:00 PM at The Gathering Place.  Discussion and/or speakers are part of each presentation.  Annual dues - $10; Non-members - $3.00/per showing.  Carol Kurtz (542-3582)

Fearrington Friends of Scandinavia
Loosely organized group which meets twice a year.  Gatherings include a short meeting  followed by a meal. Open to everyone. Aud Ackerman (542-5822).  Backup - Jean Hjelle (545-0432)

Fearrington Women’s Club
Offers meetings with informative and interesting programs with time for socializing. Also selects and supports several community service organizations, concentrating in Chatham County via fund-raising activities throughout the year. Meets: Third Wednesday,  p.m., September-May. Fearrington Writers Group  Brings together Fearrington residents who are interested in writing poetry, personal memoirs, short stories (fiction or non-fiction), family history, and novels. Provides a forum for sharing your writing. Barry Reece (542-7272) or Forrest Greenslade (545-9743).

Fearrington Yacht Club
Good-Spirited Group.  Refreshing Socialization.  One of the largest groups in Fearrington with approximately 180 members.  Annually: 2 parties in Fearrington, 2 regional  trips, 1 long-distance trip.  Dues: $10 per person.  No yacht required.  Questions—call Elaine & Stephen Hudak  (542-3757 or 545-9637).

Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library   Promotes the full use of the library as a valuable and vital community resource.  Membership dues support special projects, library events, purchase of equipment and reading programs for children. Reece Jones (542-1598).

Garden Club
Promotes a greater interest in gardening, stimulates interest in conservation of wild flowers, trees and birds and increases concern for the protection of the environment. Dues $10 per person. Meets: Third Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. (September-May). ).

Golf Club
Offers men and women league levels of  golf. Men's leagues are grouped according to handicap and usually play twice a week. There are seven tournaments per year. Initiation fee:$20; Annual dues:$14. Contact Bill Kern (542-7420). Women’s Golf- Mary Stuneck (542-9985).

Great Decisions
Once a month former diplomats, foreign students, and specialists present insightful information on a variety of foreign affairs related issues. 2007 topics include East Europe, climate change, War on Terror, South Africa, Mexico, War Crimes, Migration, and the Middle East. Harmony Grits
The Harmony Grits are an all-male choral ensemble that performs fall and spring concerts before audiences throughout the Triangle. Auditions are not required, just a love of music, a joy of singing, and the willingness to put enough energy into rehearsals to make the result enjoyable to ourselves and the community. Havurah (Jewish Fellowship)
A Jewish-sponsored cultural and educational group that is open to everyone. Meets: second Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.  Florence Shapiro (542-4034) or Stan Duberman (542-0713).

League of Women Voters
Encourages informed and active participation of citizens in governmental affairs at the local, state and national levels and provides voter service to citizens. Barbara Kendrick (542-0689)

Marathon Bridge Club  
Players are divided into teams of 8 couples each, not necessarily husband/wife pairs. Each couple in the team plays every other couple once between November and June for 18 hands of party bridge. Cost: $25.00 per person, which includes a dinner for everyone at the end of the year.

Newcomers Club of Greater Chapel Hill
We welcome all people new to the Chapel Hill area. Members enjoy a variety of activities including a gourmet dining group, men's and women's luncheons, morning coffees, tennis, fiction and non-fiction book clubs, golf, antiques, wine tastings, hiking and much more. Carol David (942-5936)

OLLI - Osher Lifelong Learning Intitute (formerly DILR)
A year-round educational community on the Duke campus for retired folks.  Courses cover history, literature, natural or social sciences, art, music, drama and current events. Caroline Resnick (542-0162).

Paletteers
Brings together Fearrington residents interested in drawing and painting. No formal instruction. No oil painting. Meets: Tuesday, 1-4 p.m. Mary Heisserman (542-4025). 

Peer Learning
Meets weekdays at Binkley Memorial Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. Study groups are offered in a variety of fields, including literature, language, government, art and women’s issues. Ted Hayes (933-7464)

Piedmont Rug Hookers
A chapter of the Association of Traditional Hooking Artists. Rug hooking, socialization, discussion of PRH issues and coming events.  Dues: $15 per year. Meets: third Saturday, September-June, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.,  at members’ homes. Bring lunch. Pat Jackson (542-4738)

Stitchery Group
If you enjoy any type of needlework, even turning a hem, enjoy the exchange of helpful ideas and information, and have a collection of projects you have never quite finished, Stitchery is for you. Meets: first Thursday, 1-3 p.m. Marye Kloster (542-0618)

Swim and Croquet Club, Inc. 
Provides swimming seven days a week from mid-May into October and croquet year round.   In addition to lap and recreational swimming in the main pool, we also have available a kiddy pool, a hot tub and various public areas. Social parties are held throughout the summer. Aerobics, aquasize and hydroaerobics programs are provided on various days throughout the season.

Tennis Club
Organizes and schedules men’s and women’s doubles, tennis trips, annual round robin  and supper meeting. Meets: Saturdays, 9 a.m., mixed doubles, Benchmark Tennis Courts. Initiation fee: $75. Annual dues: $65.  Gene Stuneck (542-9985)

Thespians
An amateur joint Fearrington/Galloway Ridge play-reading group which produces a play at the Gathering Place and/or Galloway Ridge at 7:30 p.m. on the first Sunday of every month, from October through May, except January. All Fearringtonians are welcome to attend performances and invited to join in producing or acting in our plays. Dorothy

Travel Club
Shares travel slides, videos and experiences. Meets: First Wednesdays, 7:30 p.m.,  October-May. Bob DeVido (542-1188)

United Nations Association of the USA
Supports a strong, effective United Nations positively led by the United States. Activities include advocacy, public information and outreach in Durham, Chatham and Orange Counties.  Meets on fourth Wednesdays for a “Lunch and Learn” event addressed by speakers on international affairs. UNC Alumni Club

We are a GAA-sanctioned club. We have social gatherings and engage in community projects. Our group has been chosen as an outstanding UNC Alumni Club each of our 5 years of existence. Come join your fellow Tar Heels. Hark The Sound. Vince Collura (542-5613) or Philip Cree (545-9794)

UNC Humanities Program
The UNC Humanities Program is offering "Adventures in Ideas", weekend and summer humanities seminars.  Information is available on the web at www.unc.edu/depts/human, by telephone at (919) 962-1544, or by sending e-mail inquiries to human@unc.edu. Seminars are held Friday afternoons and evenings, and Saturday mornings. Locations on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus TBA.  The seminars are sponsored by the Program in Humanities and Human Values of the College of Arts and Sciences, UNC-Chapel Hill.

Vegetarian Club
Social get-togethers with an eye toward improving diets and learning healthier ways to prepare food. Meets: Second Wednesdays, 6:30-9 p.m. Sandy & Mike Gapin (542-3076)

Village Quilters
Informal gatherings of women whose main focus is quilting and friendship. Meets: Second and fourth Mondays, 9:30 a.m., members’ homes. Nancy Cherniak (542-2567)

Village Voices
